Lake Tanganyika

Reached by a short boat-taxi ride, this is a basic lodge right beside the lake on a lovely pebbly beach. It's only about 5km west of Mpulungu. If driving then you can reach it by a poor 4WD road. Just turn off the main tar road from Mbala about 5km before Mpulungu town centre (before the police check – if you go too far the police will direct you back!). It aims at backpackers, who can get a shared boat-taxi from the market to the lodge for Kw1,500 each, or charter their own boat for around Kw20,000.

There are eight simple chalets available and also some thatched shelters under which you can camp. All share clean toilets and showers. There's plenty of scope for swimming (blissful) in the lake around the area of the lodge, and the management are friendly and will help you arrange boats for fishing, snorkelling, trips to Kalambo Falls and similar excursions. Food is available on request – breakfast for Kw4,500, lunch Kw8,500, and dinner around Kw8,500. (The barbecued fish here is excellent.)
